Robin Williams joaca rolul lui T.S.Garp, fiul unei feministe excentrice si neortodoxe, Jenny Fields (Glenn Close, in filmul ei de debut). Jenny se straduieste din rasputeri sa-i dea fiului ei o educatie nonconformista, insa orice efort de a-i oferi o viziune cat mai ampla asupra vietii ii starneste lui Garp noi temeri si fobii. Singurul lucru pe care Garp si-l doreste din tot sufletul este sa devina scriitor si sa traiasca o viata normala si linistita alaturi de familia lui.
