Will Graham(Hugh Dancy) e un investigator al FBI-ului, specializat în realizarea profilelor pentru a-i identifica pe criminalii în serie. El se bazează pentru sfaturi şi ponturi pe doctorul Hannibal Lecter(Mads Mikkelsen), fără să ştie că acesta este tocmai cel mai căutat criminal în serie dintre toţi. Serialul arată începuturile relaţiei dintre renumitul psihiatru, doctorul Lecter, şi pacientul său, Graham, care e bântuit de capacitatea sa de a empatiza cu criminalii în serie şi de aceea merge la consultaţii psihiatrice.
